As for this that has been written:
The vast, and profound dharma taught by the bhagavan, the buddha, which were composed by the [group] of the kings of the learned ones of the noble land of India previously mentioned,
these marvelous explanations as much as were done can open the eyes of intelligence of sentient beings endowed with discriminating awareness.
For nearly 2550 years, at present time, these [teachings] of listening and reflecting on the teachings in accord with the tradition exist undiminished. Because of this, I have aspired to compose teach this in order to remember the kindess of those kings of the learned ones and to follow them with undivided faith.
Now, all over the world, although the advancement of science and technology has gone to such heights, this is also a time of great confusion and distraction [because of] the hustle and bustle of [our lives].
It is incredibly important that Each of us, followers of the Buddha, obtain faith through understanding the teachings of the Buddha. Therefore, we should seek the cause [of that understanding], having investigated and analyzed in detail [these teachings] with an honest and uncertain (unsettled) mind.
Seeing that the outstanding works of the profound and vast group of masters widely renowned as “The Six Ornaments and Two Supreme Ones, Buddhapalita, Arya Vimuktisena, and so forth, are indispensable for the purpose of the arising of this kind of faith together with the companion of highest understanding through perceiving the cause [of our misfortunes], I [directed] a thangka of the seventeen pandits of nalanda to be newly made having added 9 other profound masters of the lineage on to the presently existing tradition of thangka painting of “The Six Ornaments and Two Supreme Ones”. Related with this, I have aspired to compose an offering of heartfelt devotion such as this to those great learned supreme ones, also due to encouragement which game from several of [my] devout dharma friends.
I, the Buddhist Monk Tendzin Gya Tsho, have completed these [writings] called “Supplication to the 17 Great Pandits of Nalanda, Which Clarifies the 3 Convictions,” having attained the faith of authentic conviction regarding the works of these great learned masters, and being one who is situated at the bottom of those who have studied their works, in the Thekchen Chos Gling monastery in Dharmasala, in the Kangra district of Himalpradesh, India, on the first day of the 11th month of the Iron Snake year of the 17th cycle of the Tibetan calendar (12/15/2001), 2545 years from the Buddha in the tradition of the Sthavira school.
