༈ ཐུབ་བསྟོད་བཞུགས་སོ། །
In Praise of the Buddha
༈ ཐབས་མཁས་ཐུགས་རྗེས་ཤཱཀྱའི་རིགས་སུ་འཁྲུངས། །
tapkhé tukjé shakyé rik su trung
With skillful means and compassion, you were born in the Śākya clan,
གཞན་གྱིས་མི་ཐུབ་བདུད་ཀྱི་དཔུང་འཇོམས་པ། །
zhen gyi mitup dü kyi pung jompa
unconquerable by others, you vanquished Māra’s hordes,
གསེར་གྱི་ལྷུན་པོ་ལྟ་བུར་བརྗིད་པའི་སྐུ། །
ser gyi lhünpo tabur jipé ku
your physical form resplendent, like a mountain of gold.
ཤཱཀྱའི་རྒྱལ་པོ་ཁྱོད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །
shakyé gyelpo khyö la chaktsel lo
To you, the King of the Śākyas, I pay homage!1
གང་གིས་དང་པོར་བྱང་ཆུབ་ཐུགས་བསྐྱེད་ནས། །
gang gi dangpor jangchup tukyé né
You I shall praise, who first awakened the mind of enlightenment,
བསོད་ནམས་ཡེ་ཤེས་ཚོགས་གཉིས་རྫོགས་མཛད་ཅིང༌། །
sönam yeshé tsok nyi dzok dzé ching
then completed the accumulations of merit and wisdom,
དུས་འདིར་མཛད་པ་རྒྱ་ཆེན་འགྲོ་བ་ཡི། །
dü dir dzepa gyachen drowa yi
and now in this age, through the vast sway of your actions,
མགོན་གྱུར་ཁྱོད་ལ་བདག་གིས་བསྟོད་པར་བགྱི། །
gön gyur khyö la daki töpar gyi
have become the lord and protector of living beings.
ལྷ་རྣམས་དོན་མཛད་འདུལ་བའི་དུས་མཁྱེན་ནས། །
lha nam dön dzé dülwé dü khyené
Homage to you who, having taught the gods,
ལྷ་ལས་བབས་ནས་གླང་ཆེན་ལྟར་གཤེགས་ཤིང༌། །
lha lé bap né langchen tar shek shing
knew the time had come to tame the human world, and
རིགས་ལ་གཟིགས་ནས་ལྷ་མོ་སྒྱུ་འཕྲུལ་མའི། །
rik la zik né lhamo gyutrül mé
descending from the god realm like a great elephant,
ལྷུམས་སུ་ཞུགས་པར་མཛད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །
lhum su zhukpar dzé la chaktsel lo
foresaw the family of your birth and entered the womb of Māyādevī.
ཟླ་བ་བཅུ་རྫོགས་ཤཱཀྱའི་སྲས་པོ་ནི། །
dawa chu dzok shakyé sepo ni
Homage to you, prince of the Śākyas, born after ten months
བཀྲ་ཤིས་ལུམྦིའི་ཚལ་དུ་བལྟམས་པའི་ཚེ། །
trashi lumbi tsel du tampé tsé
in the auspicious Lumbinī grove, where
ཚངས་དང་བརྒྱ་བྱིན་གྱིས་བཏུད་མཚན་མཆོག་ནི། །
tsang dang gyajin gyi tü tsen chok ni
Brahmā and Indra revered you, your supreme marks
བྱང་ཆུབ་རིགས་སུ་ངེས་མཛད་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །
jangchup rik su ngé dzé chaktsel lo
proving you were destined to be enlightened.
གཞོན་ནུ་སྟོབས་ལྡན་མི་ཡི་སེང་གེ་དེས། །
zhönu topden mi yi sengé dé
Homage to you, lion among men, in all your youthful vigour,
ཨངྒ་མ་ག་དྷར་ནི་སྒྱུ་རྩལ་བསྟན། །
angha magadhar ni gyutsel ten
displaying your prowess in the games at Aṅga-Magadha,
སྐྱེ་བོ་དྲེགས་པ་ཅན་རྣམས་ཚར་བཅད་ནས། །
kyewo drekpachen nam tsarché né
where you triumphed over the proud contestants,
འགྲན་ཟླ་མེད་པར་མཛད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །
drenda mepar dzé la chaktsel lo
so that not one could stand as your rival.
འཇིག་རྟེན་ཆོས་དང་མཐུན་པར་བྱ་བ་དང༌། །
jikten chö dang tünpar jawa dang
Homage to you, who, to comply with worldly convention,
ཁ་ན་མ་ཐོ་སྤང་ཕྱིར་བཙུན་མོ་ཡི། །
khana mato pang chir tsünmo yi
and avoid all misdeeds, took on a queen and courtiers
འཁོར་དང་ལྡན་མཛད་ཐབས་ལ་མཁས་པ་ཡིས། །
khor dang den dzé tap la khepa yi
and by acting with such skillful means,
རྒྱལ་སྲིད་སྐྱོང་བར་མཛད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །
gyelsi kyongwar dzé la chaktsel lo
so you ruled the kingdom.
འཁོར་བའི་བྱ་བར་སྙིང་པོ་མེད་གཟིགས་ནས། །
khorwé jawar nyingpo mé zik né
Homage to you, who saw that samsara is wholly futile,
ཁྱིམ་ནས་བྱུང་སྟེ་མཁའ་ལ་གཤེགས་ནས་ཀྱང༌། །
khyim né jung té kha la shek né kyang
renounced the life of a householder,
མཆོད་རྟེན་རྣམ་དག་དྲུང་དུ་ཉིད་ལས་ཉིད། །
chörten namdak drung du nyi lé nyi
and, traveling through the sky,
རབ་ཏུ་བྱུང་བར་མཛད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །
rap tu jungwar dzé la chaktsel lo
ordained yourself before the Viśuddha Stūpa.
བརྩོན་པས་བྱང་ཆུབ་སྒྲུབ་པར་དགོངས་ནས་ནི། །
tsönpé jangchup drupar gong né ni
Homage to you, who, intent on persevering till enlightened,
ནཻ་རཉྫ་ནའི་འགྲམ་དུ་ལོ་དྲུག་ཏུ། །
nairanjané dram du lo druk tu
for six years practiced austerities on the banks of the Nairañjanā,
དཀའ་བ་སྤྱད་མཛད་བརྩོན་འགྲུས་མཐར་ཕྱིན་པས། །
kawa ché dzé tsöndrü tarchinpé
and taking diligence to its ultimate perfection,
བསམ་གཏན་མཆོག་བརྙེས་མཛད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །
samten chok nyé dzé la chaktsel lo
attained the supreme samadhi.
ཐོག་མ་མེད་ནས་འབད་པ་དོན་ཡོད་ཕྱིར། །
tokma méné bepa dön yö chir
Homage to you, who, seeking to make meaningful
མ་ག་དྷ་ཡི་བྱང་ཆུབ་ཤིང་དྲུང་དུ། །
magadha yi jangchup shing drung du
all your efforts, made throughout beginningless time, sat
སྐྱིལ་ཀྲུང་མི་གཡོ་མངོན་པར་སངས་རྒྱས་ནས། །
kyiltrung miyo ngönpar sangyé né
unmoving in the vajra posture beneath the bodhi tree in Magadha
བྱང་ཆུབ་རྫོགས་པར་མཛད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །
jangchup dzokpar dzé la chaktsel lo
and awakened into true buddhahood, attaining perfect enlightenment.
ཐུགས་རྗེས་འགྲོ་ལ་མྱུར་དུ་གཟིགས་ནས་ནི། །
tukjé dro la nyurdu zik né ni
Homage to you, who, in your compassion,
ཝཱ་རཱ་ཎ་སཱི་ལ་སོགས་གནས་མཆོག་ཏུ། །
varanasi lasok né chok tu
gazed at once upon living beings, then
ཆོས་ཀྱི་འཁོར་ལོ་བསྐོར་ནས་གདུལ་བྱ་རྣམས། །
chö kyi khorlo kor né dülja nam
turned the Wheel of Dharma in sacred places like Vārāṇasī,
ཐེག་པ་གསུམ་ལ་འགོད་མཛད་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །
tekpa sum la gö dzé chaktsel lo
and established disciples in the three vehicles.
གཞན་གྱིས་རྒོལ་བ་ངན་པ་ཚར་བཅད་ཕྱིར། །
zhen gyi golwa ngenpa tsarché chir
Homage to you who destroyed evil-minded opponents,
མུ་སྟེགས་སྟོན་པ་དྲུག་དང་ལྷས་བྱིན་སོགས། །
mutek tönpa druk dang lhejin sok
by defeating the six teachers of the tīrthikas, Devadatta and the rest,
འཁོར་མོ་འཇིག་གི་ཡུལ་དུ་བདུད་རྣམས་བཏུལ། །
khormo jik gi yül du dü nam tül
as well as the māras in Vārāṇasī;2
ཐུབ་པ་གཡུལ་ལས་རྒྱལ་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །
tupa yül lé gyel la chaktsel lo
you were the mighty sage, victorious in battle.
སྲིད་པ་གསུམ་ན་དཔེ་མེད་ཡོན་ཏན་གྱིས། །
sipa sum na pemé yönten gyi
Homage to you, who performed great miracles in Śrāvastī,
མཉན་དུ་ཡོད་པར་ཆོ་འཕྲུལ་ཆེན་པོ་བསྟན། །
nyen du yöpar chotrül chenpo ten
unmatched in their splendor in all the three realms,
ལྷ་མི་འགྲོ་བ་ཀུན་གྱིས་རབ་མཆོད་པ། །
lhami drowa kün gyi rap chöpa
and through the offerings made by gods, humans and other beings,
བསྟན་པ་རྒྱས་པར་མཛད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །
tenpa gyepar dzé la chaktsel lo
caused the teachings to prosper and increase.
ལེ་ལོ་ཅན་རྣམས་ཆོས་ལ་བསྐུལ་བྱའི་ཕྱིར། །
lelo chen nam chö la küljé chir
Homage to you, who, to spur the lazy on to the Dharma,
རྩྭ་མཆོག་གྲོང་གི་ས་གཞི་གཙང་མ་རུ། །
tsachok drong gi sazhi tsangma ru
left your body, though immortal and like a vajra,
འཆི་མེད་རྡོ་རྗེ་ལྟ་བུའི་སྐུ་གཤེགས་ནས། །
chimé dorjé tabü ku shek né
and passed into parinirvāṇa
མྱ་ངན་འདའ་བར་མཛད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །
nyangen dawar dzé la chaktsel lo
in the pure abode of Kuśinagara.
ཡང་དག་ཉིད་དུ་འཇིག་པ་མེད་ཕྱིར་དང༌། །
yangdak nyi du jikpa mé chir dang
Homage to you, who, to show that you had not in reality perished,
མ་འོངས་སེམས་ཅན་བསོད་ནམས་ཐོབ་བྱའི་ཕྱིར། །
ma ong semchen sönam top jé chir
and so that beings of the future could gain merit,
དེ་ཉིད་དུ་ནི་རིང་བསྲེལ་མང་སྤྲུལ་ནས། །
denyi du ni ringsel mang trül né
emanated a wealth of relics, and caused
སྐུ་གདུང་ཆ་བརྒྱད་མཛད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །
kudung cha gyé dzé la chaktsel lo
your remains to be divided into eight portions.
ཅེས་སློབ་དཔོན་ཆེན་པོ་འཕགས་པ་ཀླུ་སྒྲུབ་ཀྱིས་མཛད་དོ།།
This was composed by the great master Ārya Nāgārjuna.
༈ གང་ཚེ་རྐང་གཉིས་གཙོ་བོ་ཁྱོད་བལྟམས་ཚེ། །
gang tsé kang nyi tsowo khyö tam tsé
When you were born, chief among human beings,
ས་ཆེན་འདི་ལ་གོམ་པ་བདུན་བོར་ནས། །
sa chen di la gompa dün bor né
you took seven steps on this earth and said:
ང་ནི་འཇིག་རྟེན་འདི་ན་མཆོག་ཅེས་གསུངས། །
nga ni jikten di na chok ché sung
“In this world I am supreme.”
དེ་ཚེ་མཁས་པ་ཁྱོད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །
detsé khepa khyö la chaktsel lo
To you, O wise one, I pay homage!
དང་པོ་དགའ་ལྡན་ལྷ་ཡི་ཡུལ་ནས་བྱོན། །
dangpo ganden lha yi yül né jön
First, you descended from the heaven of Tuṣita,
རྒྱལ་པོའི་ཁབ་ཏུ་ཡུམ་གྱི་ལྷུམས་སུ་ཞུགས། །
gyelpö khap tu yum gyi lhum su zhuk
and in the royal home entered your mother’s womb;
ལུམྦི་ནི་ཡི་ཚལ་དུ་ཐུབ་པ་བལྟམས། །
lumbini yi tsel du tupa tam
in the grove at Lumbinī, O sage, you were born:
བཅོམ་ལྡན་ལྷ་ཡི་ལྷ་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །
chomden lha yi lha la chaktsel lo
to the victorious ‘god among gods,’ I pay homage!
གཞལ་ཡས་ཁང་དུ་མ་མ་བརྒྱད་བཞིས་མཆོད། །
zhelyé khang du mama gyé zhi chö
You were tended by thirty-two nurses at the palace,
ཤཱཀྱའི་གྲོང་དུ་གཞོན་ནུས་རོལ་རྩེད་མཛད། །
shakyé drong du zhönü röltsé dzé
you spent your youth in sports at the house of the Śākyas;
སེར་སྐྱའི་གནས་སུ་ས་འཚོ་ཁབ་ཏུ་བཞེས། །
serkyé né su sa tso khap tu zhé
at Kapilavastu you took Gopā as your wife:
སྲིད་གསུམ་མཚུངས་མེད་སྐུ་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །
si sum tsungmé ku la chaktsel lo
to you who are unequalled in the three worlds, I pay homage!
གྲོང་ཁྱེར་སྒོ་བཞིར་སྐྱོ་བའི་ཚུལ་བསྟན་ནས། །
drongkhyer go zhir kyowé tsül ten né
At the four city gates, you were shown the four kinds of sorrow,
མཆོད་རྟེན་རྣམ་དག་དྲུང་དུ་དབུ་སྐྲ་བསིལ། །
chörten namdak drung du utra sil
and cut your own hair in front of the Viśuddha Stūpa;
ནཻ་རཉྫ་ནའི་འགྲམ་དུ་དཀའ་ཐུབ་མཛད། །
nairanjané dram du katup dzé
on the banks of the Nairañjanā you practiced as an ascetic:
སྒྲིབ་གཉིས་སྐྱོན་དང་བྲལ་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །
drip nyi kyön dang drel la chaktsel lo
to you who are free from the faults of the two obscurations, I pay homage!
རྒྱལ་པོའི་ཁབ་ཏུ་གླང་ཆེན་སྨྱོན་པ་བཏུལ། །
gyelpö khap tu langchen nyönpa tül
At Rājagṛha you tamed a rogue elephant,
ཡངས་པ་ཅན་དུ་སྤྲེའུས་སྦྲང་རྩི་ཕུལ། །
yangpachen du pé’ü drangtsi pül
in Vaiśālī the monkeys offered you honey;
མ་ག་དྷ་རུ་ཐུབ་པ་མངོན་སངས་རྒྱས། །
magadha ru tupa ngön sangyé
in Magadha, O sage, you realized buddhahood:
མཁྱེན་པའི་ཡེ་ཤེས་འབར་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །
khyenpé yeshé bar la chaktsel lo
to you in whom omniscient wisdom blossomed, I pay homage!
ཝཱ་ར་ཎཱ་སིར་ཆོས་ཀྱི་འཁོར་ལོ་བསྐོར། །
varanasir chö kyi khorlo kor
At Vārāṇasī you turned the wheel of Dharma,
ཛེ་ཏའི་ཚལ་དུ་ཆོ་འཕྲུལ་ཆེན་པོ་བསྟན། །
dzeté tsel du chotrül chenpo ten
and in the Jeta Grove you showed great miracles;
རྩྭ་མཆོག་གྲོང་དུ་དགོངས་པ་མྱ་ངན་འདས། །
tsachok drong du gongpa nyangen dé
at Kuśinagara you passed into parinirvāṇa:*
ཐུགས་ནི་ནམ་མཁའ་འདྲ་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །
tuk ni namkha dra la chaktsel lo
to you whose wisdom is like the sky, I pay homage!*
འདི་ལྟར་བསྟན་པའི་བདག་པོ་བཅོམ་ལྡན་འདས། །
ditar tenpé dakpo chomdendé
Through the merit of this brief praise of
མཛད་པའི་ཚུལ་ལ་མདོ་ཙམ་བསྟོད་པ་ཡི། །
dzepé tsül la do tsam töpa yi
the deeds of the Enlightened One, Master of the Teaching,
དགེ་བས་འགྲོ་བ་ཀུན་གྱི་སྤྱོད་པ་ཡང༌། །
gewé drowa kün gyi chöpa yang
may the actions of all living beings
བདེ་གཤེགས་ཉིད་ཀྱི་མཛད་དང་མཚུངས་པར་ཤོག །
deshek nyi kyi dzé dang tsungpar shok
come to equal the acts of the Sugata himself.
ཅེས་པ་འདི་སློབ་དཔོན་འཕགས་པ་ཀླུ་སྒྲུབ་ཀྱིས་མཛད་པའོ།།
This was composed by the ācārya Asaṅga.
༈ དེ་བཞིན་གཤེགས་པ་ཁྱེད་སྐུ་ཅི་འདྲ་དང་། །
deshyin shekpa khyé ku chindra dang
O Tathāgata, may I and others have a form,
འཁོར་དང་སྐུ་ཚེའི་ཚད་དང་ཞིང་ཁམས་དང་། །
khor dang ku tsé tsé dang zhing kham dang
an entourage, a life-span, a pure realm
ཁྱེད་ཀྱི་མཚན་མཆོག་བཟང་པོ་ཅི་འདྲ་བ། །
khyé kyi tsen chok zangpo chindra wa
and sublime marks of perfection
དེ་འདྲ་ཁོ་ནར་བདག་སོགས་འགྱུར་བར་ཤོག །
dé dra khonar dak sok gyurwar shok
exactly like you.
༈ ཁྱོད་ལ་བསྟོད་ཅིང་གསོལ་བ་བཏབ་པའི་མཐུས། །
khyö la tö ching sölwa tapé tü
Through the power of our praising you and this prayer,
བདག་སོགས་གང་དུ་གནས་པའི་ས་ཕྱོགས་སུ། །
dak sok gang du nepé sa chok su
in whatever lands we dwell, may
ནད་དང་དབུལ་ཕོངས་འཐབ་རྩོད་ཞི་བ་དང་། །
né dang wul pong taptsö zhiwa dang
illness, negativity, poverty, and conflict be quelled,
ཆོས་དང་བཀྲ་ཤིས་འཕེལ་བར་མཛད་དུ་གསོལ། །
chö dang tashi pelwar dzé du söl
and Dharma and auspiciousness increase and spread.3
